This post will show you how to create your own patterned paper that we will use for die cutting!
This is one of my favorite layouts! I created this layout for Spellbinders for CHA. I used a ton of Stampers Anonymous stamps - many designed by Tim Holtz - to create my own unique patterned paper. Let me show you the process I used to create this layout.
First, I want to show you how easy it was to create the title, then we'll move on to the patterned paper technique.
I used a Mini Mister and filled it with a bit of water, distress ink refill in walnut, and a bit of gold colored perfect pearls.
I used Tim Holtz grunge board letters to spell out the word "Believe".
I sprayed them with the solution in the mini mister, and while they were still wet, I pressed more perfect pearls in a silver tone, into the letters. Set aside to dry.
Pick out your favorite stamps. I prefer one's that work well as a background, such as music notes, random text, flourishes, swirls, etc.
Distress Inks work well for this technique. I chose aged mahogany, pine tree, black soot and walnut stain.
An Acrylic block helps to see where you want to place the stamp and how to overlap them.
Stamp randomly, stamp more than once with only one application of distress ink. This will help add some depth and visual interest. Use a piece of paper approximately twice the size of the die cut you are using. That way you have enough paper to cut a second die if you need to.
Let images go off the page. You can also wrap part of the stamp around the acrylic block so you will only stamp with part of the image.
Here is my finished patterned paper. It is approximately 6" x 12". This gives me a lot of versatility in choosing which areas I want to die cut.
Notice the variety in colors, the dark and light impressions of the stamps and the random pattern.
Place the 12" Poinsettia Borderabilities Grand die cut on your newly created patterned paper. Doesn't it look cool?!! Adjust the placement of the die on the paper until you get the look you want.
Go ahead cut and emboss your die template!
Now get out your fluid chalk inks by Clearsnap. I used a dark red and a dark green color. I like to use a sponge or applicator to apply the fluid chalk ink.
First I apply the red and then the green. I like to keep the brown embossing pad under the die. It allows me to really get into the corners with the ink.
You will need to wash your embossing pad when you're done applying the chalk ink.
Take your die cut out of the die template and see the gorgeous creation you just made!
Here's my finished die cut. I love all the details, the layers of ink and chalk and images.
Isn't it so fun to think of all the possibilities you can do with this technique?
The Poinsettia flowers on this 12" die will pop up and curl if you want them too. It is so versatile!
I used this same technique with the new Labels 8 die as well.
Notice how I also placed a few stamps on the white background paper. This helps tie all the elements together.
Thanks for stopping by and learning more about making your own patterned paper with stamped images! I hope you've enjoyed it. Have a fabulous week!
